Conditions & Treatments

The choice of treatment depends mainly on the severity of injury and neurological status of the patient. Rule of saving golden hours for trauma management along with efficient neurocritical care are very important. Use of Intracranial pressure monitoring device, transcranial Doppler, ETCO2 monitoring, advanced ventilators & state of the art neuroradiology suite further improve the recovery of neurotrauma patients.

Some of the treatments to treat complex head & spinal injury patients at the hospital are:

  • Placement of Intracrinal Pressure Monitoring System
  • Decompressive Craniotomy
  • Duroplasty & Cranioplasty for depressed fractures of skull
  • Anterior Cranial Fossa repair for traumatic CSF Rhinorrhea
  • Endoscopic repair of post-traumatic CSF Rhinorrhea
  • Dynamic stabilization of spinal fractures
  • Percutaneous Odontoid Screw fixatation for fracture of c2
  • Posterior fusion for complex cranio-vertebral junction injuries
  • Halo Jacket application
  • Lateral mass screw fixatation for cervical spine injury
  • Baclofen Pump implantation for spasticity after spine injury
  • Stem Cell Therapy

Treatment options could be the repair of damaged or abnormal blood vessels in the brain/ spinal cord by an open surgery or by an endovascular treatment (Specialized non- invasive techniques). Some of the treatments options available at QRG Central Hospital and Research Centre are:

  • Clipping of Aneurysms of cerebral vessels
  • Craniotomy (Open surgery) for Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) of brain vessels
  • Cerebral Revascularization Procedures
  • Carotid Endarterectomy
  • Decompressive Craniotomy for large brain hemorrhage/ infarct
  • Endovascular procedures for stroke, Intraarterial Thrombolysis, Carotid Stenting, Baloon Angioplasty
  • Coiling of Intracranial Aneurysm & AVM
  • Preoperative Embolization of vascular brain tumors

Treatment of brain of spine tumors depends upon their location and type of tumor. These can be treated with open neurosurgical procedures, minimally invasive approaches or radio-surgeries. Malignant (Cancerous) brain tumors are usually treated with surgery, chemotherapy radiotherapy, or a combination of these. Some of the treatments to treat brain & spine tumor patients at QRG Central Hospital and Research Centre are:

  • Awake Craniotomy for brain tumour
  • Image guided surgery for brain & spine
  • Intraoperative Fluorescence guided tumour resection
  • Endoscopic surgery for ventricular tumors
  • Transnasal Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery for spinal tumors

Below are the treatment options available for Epilepsy at QRG Central Hospital and Research Centre:

  • Surgery: Surgery is only possible for a minority of people with epilepsy and it is only considered when medication fails to prevent seizures.
  • Vagal nerve stimulation: A small generator is implanted under the skin below the left collar bone to reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures.
  • Medications

Below are the treatment options available to treat Multiple Sclerosis:

  • Medications
  • Deep brain stimulation – This surgical procedure is effective in controlling tremors,
  • Controlling Muscles Spasms

Below are the treatment options available for Parkinson’s Disease:

  • Medications
  • Deep Brain Stimulation
  • Pallidotomy: Destroys the overactive Globus Pallidus to lessen the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
  • Thalamotomy: Thalamotomy destroys part of the thalamus to block the abnormal brain activity from reaching the muscles and causing tremor
  • Gamma Knife

Below are the treatment options available to treat Stroke at QRG Central Hospital and Research Centre:

  • Medicine like Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) can break up blood clots in the arteries of the brain
  • Surgery like arotid endarterectomy or Carotid Artery aangioplasty helps to open up blocked carotid arteries
  • Intra-arterial thrombolysis also helps to break up the blood clot in the brain
  • Aneurysm Clipping and Coil Embolization – This procedure helps to treat the bulge in the artery
  • Quit Smoking
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Following a healthy diet
  • Regular Exercise

Below are the treatment options available to treat Headache:

  • Diagnosis for any serious, life-threatening conditions (e.g., stroke, meningitis) is required
  • Brain scan called CAT (computer assisted tomography) scan or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to check for serious causes of headache
  • Reduce stress level

The dedicated Pain Clinic at QRG Central Hospital and Research Centre deals with all types of neuropathic pains. The comprehensive pain assessment approach is the first step toward finding and treating the root cause of your discomfort. Once the aetiology of the pain is identified, the procedures such as physical therapy, biofeed back technique and stress reduction, etc. are applied.

The Pain Clinic at the hospital offers facilities like:

  • Rapid Pain Assessment by a team of Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Physiotherapists, Psychiatrists and Psycologists.
  • Patient Education and Support: We make an attempt to inform and educate our patients about their symptoms, their problem and the treatment options at every stage.
  • Spinal Rehabilitation: We adopt an exercise based treatment approach combined with advice regarding posture and back care and usually avoid local treatments like interferential therapy, short-wave diathermy and ultrasound massage for chronic pain management.
  • Pain Counselling: Pain counselling helps to form coping strategies to break the vicious cycle of pain and anxiety and reduces the severity of perceived pain and the duration of symptoms. The aim is to restore spinal pain sufferers to a wholesome and productive life.
  • Interventional procedures like minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, Kyphoplasty, Neucleoplasty, Radiofrequency Abalation/ Microvascular decompression for Trigeminal Neuralgia, etc.
